A former village, Dona Paula Beach is one of the most popular areas in the beautiful state of Goa. Not only it is home to National Institute of Oceanography, but also alongside it lie two of the very important buildings, International Centre Goa and Goa University.
Initially known as Oddavell, this village was renamed paying a tribute to Paula Amaral Antonio de Souto Maior, a Portuguese woman who worked for the villagers' betterment. It is believed that this woman emerges from the glistening waves on a moonlit night wearing only a pearl necklace. After the Portuguese rule ended over Goa, Dona Paula emerged as a posh and fashionable residential area in the state. It houses most of the luxurious hotels and resorts in the state including the very popular Cidade de Goa. A quiet stretch of pristine beauty during monsoons turns into a crowded tourist madhouse during the peak season.
Dona Paula beach is located just about 7-km from Panaji. This place is called the Lovers Paradise in Goa, named after Dona Paula de Menezes. A myth has been attached to this place and according one legend the Viceroy's daughter after facing objections from her family about her love affair with a poor fisherman jumped of the cliff.
The enticing story is about a girl named Dona Paula de Menzes, after whom the Goa beach has been named. She was the daughter of a viceroy in colonial India, who threw herself off the cliff, when refused permission to marry a local fisherman, Gaspar Dias.
Location Seven kilometers west of the Indian state of Goa’s capital Panajim (Panaji), Dona Paula Beach is nestled on the southern side of the rocky hammer-shaped headlands that divide the Zuari and Mandovi estuaries. Providing a good view of the Mormugao harbor, this beach is fringed by palm trees and casuarina groves. The proximity of the beach to the capital city makes it a popular tourist sight.
